Voices of Flow #2

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Are you looking at a roll-out, scaling & structuring (toolset view using Agile or other frameworks) and/or transformation (mindset view)? Understanding the differences between these will be what separates success from failure.

Today’s introduction video in the Voices of Flow series focuses on the need for both the Mindset view (Flow) and Toolset view (structuring via Agile and/or Scaling Agile). This is my view that has emerged during the last 15+ years of working with the Flow Leadership Framework and Mindset (it’s a both/and).

The Skillset(s) for implementing each of these are two (sometimes) competing competences since both management and leadership skills are required.

Yes, I know that Agile claims it is a mindset.

The reality is that whether we look at the Scrum Framework, SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), etc., due to how they are structured they are primarily taught as toolsets. Structuring somethings doesn’t necessarily produce the desired mindset shift.

Even the “agile onion” (there are many versions / copies of this floating out there on the internet) starts with Tools:

A few years back some other consultants and myself were having a lively discussion about this picture above (my version of what’s available online). My point is that you simply cannot begin with Tools & Processes and somehow end up with the right mindset. That actually goes against what we teach in the 4R Model in Flow Leadership:

Right Actions are preceded by Right Values & Attitudes and ultimately emanate and flow from whatever the individual has as their Right Truth. With that in mind, this means that we need to begin with Mindset first, not the other way around:

This picture aligns with the 4R Model and it is from mindset that we work our way out to decide on the right tools and processes. Most companies miss this completely.

This is a both/and situation.

Both the Toolset and the Mindset are required to succeed in any transformation you want to do (btw, this works for more than just Agile transformations) and the complete picture looks like this:

There is a huge stampede of companies trying to implement SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), LeSS, Nexus, etc. As I shared in an earlier post, over 80% of those are experiencing high levels of friction and aren’t succeeding in their implementations.

This is because they do not understand (or perhaps agree with) the picture above.

If you need to transform your culture, then you need Flow a.s.a.p.

Let’s chat!

__________

For those that are not familiar with the Flow Leadership Framework & Mindset, it is what’s next for businesses and organizations that are ready to succeed regardless of the methods, frameworks or management tools that they use throughout their enterprise. Flow is methodology agnostic.

Are you ‘in the zone’ of optimal performance right now as a person, team or enterprise? Did you get there by accident or by focused intentional acts?

“Flow” gives you the way of working and mindset needed to create and maintain an optimal state of high performance as an individual, team or organization.

The Flow Leadership Framework turbocharges everything you do, including “business agile” leadership and Scaled Agile.
