What’s your Passion #43 – CVO not CEO

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In CxO-level jobs we routinely put what they do: CIO, CTO, COO, CFO, CMO, etc. But, what does a CEO really do? Is “Executive” enough of a description? Or do we need something better?

My earlier post on Vision Comes First also has a video with Simon admitting that Vision comes first. And this is the foundation as to why we need a CVO (Chief Vision Officer), not a CEO! In the infinite mindset, the CEO’s role is Vision!

Vision is Core!

Vision is at the core and permeates everything we do in the Guerilla Leadership Mindsets (these are like the elements in the periodic table):

Twelve of the eighteen “tiles” in the picture above have Vision at their core (the 9 tiles for Vision plus the three other tiles for the 4R Model, the 4D Model and the Key Tools we use in Guerilla Leadership). Close to 70% of the Guerilla Leadership Mindsets are laser focused on Vision.

In today’s blog post I’ve embedded a short video clip from Simon Sinek that just absolutely nails what we’ve been teaching in Guerilla Leadership for over 28 years.

Vision comes first.

“Without Vision, the people perish (and/or cast off restraint)” was penned (by one of the wisest men to ever live) almost 3,000 years ago. It is still valid today and Vision is not just vital to your success, but to building a higher purpose that endures the test of time.

With almost 90% of all Fortune 500 companies that are no longer on the list, it appears that most of the companies that either fell off the list, went bankrupt, or that were acquired were playing a very finite game:

  • In other words, only 10.4% of the Fortune 500 companies from 1955 have remained on the list during the 64 years since, in 2019, and more than 89% of the companies from 1955 have either gone bankrupt, merged with (or were acquired by) another firm, or they still exist but have fallen from the top Fortune 500 companies (ranked by total revenues) in one year or more.

Call it “creative destruction” if you will. But this is all within the span of a single individual’s lifetime (only 64 years!). And the pace of change is accelerating.

Vision not only comes first, but it is also the crucial component that drives whether your organization will even exist tomorrow, or not. It is stunning that so little time, focus, or attention is put into building and communicating the Anticipatory Vision that will not just help you survive but to thrive.

Guerilla Leadership is your path to build the right Mindset to enable enduring Vision.
